SOUL DEVOURED "Eleven deadly Sins"

Only a bit more than one year ago the Austrian band SOUL DEVOURED was founded. That year they released their first and only demo, and in 2002 they commenced work on their first full length album. German Metal magazine Rock Hard heard one of their songs, and included it on their Unerhört CD-sampler for talented bands. The song they used, "Forces of Heresy", can be found on the first album of SOUL DEVOURED, called "Eleven Deadly Sins".
A calm piano intro with a dreamy guitar solo kicks of the album, followed by first track "Forces of Heresy". The main slice of the musical content on "Eleven Deadly Sins" is Thrash Metal, but there is also plenty of Death Metal in the music. In "Forces of Heresy" SOUL DEVOURED sounds a lot like DEATH, and this is not the only song that reminds me of this band. A big difference is that SOUL DEVOURED doesn't play their musical as technical and high-flying as the American masters, but still the main foundation of the Austrian band is melodic Death/ Thrash riffs. Since so far no suitable drummer (nor bass player) was found to join the ranks, on "Eleven Deadly Sins" we can hear a drum computer. It is integrated nicely into the music so that this is not really clearly audible, but admittedly, in some songs like "Seven deadly Sins" the drum sound can be a bit annoying. Then finally the vocals; those are mainly screams, with the exception of growls for very short periods in some of the songs, so nothing really extraordinary. Sadly, apart from a few songs, the music of SOUL DEVOURED fails to convince me. It's not bad or anything, but most of the songs sound too familiar. "Living Dead" is not that different from the rest, but at least it has quite a few interesting hooks, as well as some clean backing vocals, courtesy of guitar player Thomas Schmoll. I can see why Rock Hard saw potential in the band, because apart from "Living Dead", the songs "Forces of Heresy", "Portal to my Resurrection", instrumental "Like a Razor to the Vein" (with an interesting solo passage) and the slightly faster "The Deathlight Corps" are also pretty good. The layout of the booklet is also quite professional, and the whole album has a clear production.
To be fair, "Eleven Deadly Sins" is definitely not a bad recording, especially when you consider that the band started relatively short ago. But on the other hand, I don't have the feeling it brings anything I haven't heard before. A decent debut, but I expect something extra from SOUL DEVOURED in the future.
